Georgia State Hospital
Thanks to Sara
"Hi there,
I’ve been reading your site for years now, and today I finally was able to
capture some photos of one of my excursions I’ve been on.
These photos are from the old lunatic asylum in GA which is about an hour
outside of Atlanta.
I believe the original hospital was built in 1842, and buildings have been
added on since then. It’s currently all shut down, with multiple prison
buildings on campus for those that were criminally insane. There is also a
large graveyard that is said to be the resting place of 30,000 unknown
bodies. The markers in the first photo are simply numbered with no names.
Supposedly the caretakers at some point pulled certain ones up because they
were two difficult to mow around. The third photo is what looks like a
discarded marker lodge in a very weird mound. The entire campus is huge and
it seemed like it went on forever.
I was able to get in to one of the admissions buildings, but did not stick
around too long due to some creepy noises and being paranoid about the
asbestos. We were able to find a room with patient files detailing sexual
abuse and mistreatment investigations, as well as a very helpful map of the
campus dated January 1991. Two of my friends snuck in to the Jones building
(the building in the last few photos) and took some iPhone shots of the
inside. This building included a crematorium, delousing rooms that could be
seen from the outside and supposedly a baby nursery. My friends scrambled
out quickly after their phone flashlights and cameras stopped working, which
is very creepy!
Walking up to one of the windows in the Jones building you’ll feel an
intense cold, like someone opened a freezer door. It’s a very spooky and
huge campus with some beautiful architecture that’s easily accessible and
worth the trip outside of the city.
I’ll be returning in the spring to explore more of the inside of the Jones
building, so hopefully I’ll be able to get more interior shots!"

I DON'T GIVE OUT LOCATIONS. I DON'T KNOW IF THE
BUILDINGS ARE FOR SALE. I DON'T KNOW IF THE BUILDINGS ARE STILL STANDING.
