Tri-City Motor Speedway,
Auburn, Michigan
The Tri-City Motor Speedway in Auburn, Michigan opened in 1947 as a 1/4 mile
dirt track. Eventually the owners decided to expand, adding a 1/2 mile,
connected to the track. When the owners of a junkyard adjacent to the track
would not allow them to expand turns one and two onto their land. In response,
the owners of the track built the track right on the property line giving the
Speedway it's unique 5-turn layout.
The Speedway closed in the middle of the 2001 racing season, but reopened in
August of 2003. Following the end of the 2004 season, the owners tore up the
1/4 mile track, to replace it with a dirt track. Citing falling property
values, the owners of the Speedway asked for their payments to be lowered.
When it was refused, work on the new dirt track was halted, and the track has
sat ever since.
