Lucy the Elephant Timeline

 

1881 – Lucy is built

 

May 1884- The “Light of Asia” is built

 

1884 – “Elephantine Colossus” is built

 

1887- Lucy is sold

 

Sept 1896 - Elephantine Colossus burns

 

1898 – Creator James Lafferty dies

 

1900 – “Light of Asia” is torn down

 

1902 – Lucy is used as a home

 

1903 – Lucy is damaged in a hurricane

 

1916 – Owner John Gertzen dies and President Wilson visits

 

1929 – Howdah torn from Lucy

 

1944 – Lucy survives another hurricane

 

1963 – Owner Sophia Gertzen dies

 

1969 – Founding of The Margate Civic Association

 

1970 – Lucy is moved

 

1971 – Lucy applies for the National Register of Historic Places

 

1974 – Lucy is opened to the public again

 

1976 – Lucy is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places

 

1980 – Restoration of interior planned

 

2000 – Lucy’s fully restored and the interior is opened
