Smith Infirmary, and relocated to an old building at the government quarantine station on Tompkins Ave. It was Staten Island's first not-for-profit voluntary hospital. In 1870 and until 1890, the hospital was moved to a residence on Hannah St. There were only 12 beds in it.
In 1890, the Infirmary moved to a six-acre site on Castleton Ave. in New Brighton. In 1894, the first Training School for Nurses opens with a class of eight. 1897, brought the first operation using x-ray's, one year after its development.

In 1898, the United States warships Rio Grande, Leona and Concho sail intoNew York harbor with wounded from the Spanish-American War. Horse-drawn ambulances from Staten Island Hospital transfer the wounded to the Castleton Ave. facility for treatment.
At the turn of the century, phones are added to facilitate communication between hospital buildings. The Samuel R. Smith Infirmary was renamed the "Staten Island Hospital" in 1916. Finally in 1979, the Staten Island Hospital moved  from its Castleton Ave. residence to its current campus at 475 Seaview Ave. in Ocean Breeze.
