Arson squad probing fire at Wayne building
WAYNE - A fire in a building that has been abandoned for several years was brought under control quickly Tuesday afternoon, but investigators are looking into whether the blaze was deliberately set.
Firefighters responded about 1:30 p.m. and found heavy fire in the two-story structure close to Party City on Route 23 south, authorities said.
"The fire was contained to the front of the building; some cabinets and garbage caught [fire], and then it traveled to the walls," Fire Chief John Gabriel said. "It's been boarded up, but we've been having trouble with kids getting in and then skateboarding inside. They keep ripping down the wooden boards."
Two lanes of Route 23 south were closed for about two hours while emergency equipment was hooked up to hydrants on the highway, Gabriel said. Four fire companies responded, as well as the Wayne First Aid Squad. No injuries were reported.
Arson investigators and the detective bureau are probing the blaze, Gabriel said.
